Christine King Farris Legacy Foundation


The Christine King Farris Legacy Foundation, Inc. honors the life of this Atlanta native, long serving educator, philanthropist, and civic leader. The foundation works to uplift the legacy of Christine King Farris by working to promote higher education and leadership development. In its inaugural year, the foundation celebrates the 95th birthday of Christine King Farris and raises funds to support the Leadership Program and the Christine King Farris Scholarship, both at Spelman College.

Who is Dr. Christine King Farris?

Dr. Christine King Farris was born to Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr..and Mrs. Alberta Williams King on September 11, 1927.She and her younger brothers, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Alfred Daniel (A.D.) King, were born in the family home (now “The Birth Home” of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site).

A graduate from Spelman College and Columbia University, Dr.Farris taught at W. H. Crogman Elementary School, as an adjunct professor at Morehouse College and Atlanta University, and finally as an Associate Professor of Education at Spelman College. She retired from Spelman College in 2014, as Professor Emerita. Her sixty-three (63) year span of dedicated service and educational leadership is a significant contribution to the academic community of Atlanta.


Dr. Farris is the longest serving faculty member (56 years) of Spelman College, to date. Dr. Farris is also the co-builder of The King Center and the longest serving member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.


Christine King Farris is the author of “My Brother Martin” (for young readers), “Martin Luther King: His Life and Dream,” a worktext for educators, “March On, “ a children’s book about the March on Washington and “Through It All,” her personal memoir.


Dr. Farris was married to Isaac N. Farris, Sr.(deceased) and has two children, Isaac N. Farris, Jr and Angela Farris Watkins; and one grandchild, Farris Christine Watkins.
